In the final episode of the On Air with ECU City series, Phil Hues, Aurecon's built environment leader, joined ECU broadcasting student Yvette Ogilvie, to explore the sustainability features of ECU City.

Phil gave listeners a sneak peek at the innovative solutions being explored to reduce ECU City’s carbon footprint and increase energy efficiency.

“We are designing the ECU City campus towards a five-star green star rating, which is considered Australian excellence,” said Phil.

“Our goal is to minimise the waste of resources, prevent pollution and demonstrate environmentally sensitive development, innovation and continuous improvement.

ECU is already to committed to reducing the environmental footprint of its existing campuses and encourage the achievement of a sustainable community and learning environment. ECU City is expected to take this to the next level.

As one of the key consultants on ECU City, Aurecon is working closely with the designers, architects, and engineers on energy efficient features, such as sun shading, solar panels and climate control.

“Together, we are modelling the building to be as energy efficient as possible,” said Phil.

“To minimise the energy consumption, we have considered solutions for the building façade, systems and fittings.

Phil explained that the green star rating will extend beyond the bricks and mortar, with the aim to incorporate sustainability into the student experience.

“With the location of the campus above the bus port and in the heart of the city, and with no specific car park in the campus, we are hoping to encourage the community to use other sustainable means of transport.”
