Students bring samba to the streets of Perth

Student’s from WAAPA’s Defying Gravity percussion group marched the streets of Perth with rhythm and energy.

Talented students from WAAPA’s award winning percussion ensemble Defying Gravity brought the beats to the city streets as part of the City of Perth’s AFL Grand Final celebrations today.

The group’s energy and rhythm rippled through the Murray Street Mall and set the pace ahead of the historic event to be held at Perth’s Optus Stadium on 25 September 2021.

With electrifying rhythm and samba and rock inspired beats, CBD workers, visitors and commuters were treated to a morning of musical magic. The celebrations were part of the City of Perth’s week-long AFL Grand Final events at ‘Footy Place’ (Forrest Place) in the CBD.

Paying homage to the teams vying for the coveted Premiership Cup, the students drummed the team songs from Western Bulldogs and the Melbourne Demons along with the help of some passionate fans.

The exhilarating display was featured on a live cross on Channel 7’s Sunrise program, while one onlooker commented that the group “made her day”.

The energetic performance gave a taste of what’s to come when ECU City opens its doors in 2025.

WAAPA is one of the schools that will have a new home at ECU City, which will be located directly opposite Yagan Square in the Perth CBD. The creative industries, business and technology campus will breathe new life into the heart of Perth, with WAAPA bringing more than 300 live performances to the CBD arts calendar each year.
